When a student is struggling, there is always a reason, and finding it is the hardest part of teaching. Finding it takes deep knowledge of the subject and years of experience teaching it.

Take mathematics. Elementary and Additional Mathematics sound alike, but they ask for different things. Elementary Mathematics rewards understanding ideas and applying them to unfamiliar problems. Additional Mathematics needs more than understanding. At SEC it is two papers of 2 hours 15 minutes each, and every step of long working must stay precise from the first question to the last. That takes stamina and accuracy, which a tutor has to build with specific direction.

The same is true beyond the sciences. In General Paper, good grammar is only a small part of the mark. The harder skills are reading the question correctly, weighing nuance in language, and drawing on current affairs that never stop changing. A student who writes fluently can still lose marks because the essay answered a slightly different question, or argued only one side. Spotting that takes an experienced eye.

Most of our students stay for years. As they move up, the subjects change and so do the challenges, and the same tutor, who already knows how the student thinks, can adjust the help each time. That is why, before we recommend a tutor to a family, we make sure the tutor is committed to the whole journey.
